Heeg has always been a fishing town. Until the thirties of the past century the people from Heeg have been exporting eel to England. Nowadays Heeg is a typical boating village. In the centre there are several historic buildings, of which the captain’s house is a pretty example. De Syl is characteristic for Heeg and in the nearness of the N.H. church, built in 1745, there are several nice ancient streets. Especially on summer days a visit to the shopping street of Heeg is a nice pastime.
Heeg is a nice home base to explore the IJsselmeer and the widespread lake area of southwest Friesland. There are many recreational facilities in Heeg. There are youth hostels, shipyards, marinas, sailing schools, holiday homes and boat rental companies. Every year thousands of yachts pass the brigde of Oningahuizen on the route of Sneek-IJlst-Heeg-Woudsend.
