IJlst (Drylts)

In the north of Heeg lies the town of IJlst, half way along the route to Bolsward. This Elfsteden city is located on the intersection point of de Wijde Wijmets to Heeg, de Bolswardevaart to Bolsward and de Geeuw to Sneek. The inner centre of Heeg dates back to 1270. The only thing that remained from the rich history of shipbuilders is a modern shipyard.

Along the Eegracht there are primarily eighteenth century built houses. Characteristic for IJlst are the canals in the inner city, with typical communal gardens and streets filled with tilias. By the water of De Geeuw the sawmill of De Rat is situated. Nowadays this mill still saws tree trunks into planks. It’s possible to visit this sawmill.
